I'm also allergic to cats but I noticed that if the room i am in is well aired and if there is a cat in there as well, my allergies don't bother me. It is only when I am in a place that is not well ventilated that my allergies go haywire. It would happen every time I would visit a cousin of mine. Walk in to his house and it felt like my eyes were on fire.

My own vet is allergic to cats, and she always seems fine around my cat. You can take allergy medication or allergy shots. . . but best to make sure that these remedies work before pursuing the career.

Try an over the counter anti-histamine, or allergy injections. The most important thing to do first is consult a doctor to see if either of these would be of benefit for you. I think you'd probably have to handle and deal with cats while in school, but afterwards when you have your own clinic...don't see cats, or specialize in large animals.

I am allergic to cats also, but I have two of them. Thanks to a good allergist, I have learned to control my allergies and not allow them to take over my life. I use a product called Flonase each night (although you can use it each morning if you're exposed to more allergens in the daytime); it helps my body not to be "alerted" by everyday allergens like pollens, cat dander, mold, etc., and keeps it from going unnecessarily into the high-level defensive mode that we think of as allergies. There are several different products that can help keep the allergies in check; I suggest trying them before you give up on your dreams to do what you want.

Good luck!

Be a large animal vet, or specialize in exotics or dogs. Lots of people do that. There is actually a shortage of large animal vets in the U.S. right now.
