What happens if there are billions?

We are nowhere near using such a theory to predict anything. The present headscratching is over an attempt to construct a framework on which a theory can be hung.

Brane theory does not state how many there can be. There can indeed be an infinite (or close enough) number of universes out there. We cannot figure out because right now nothing we have can even observe the higher dimensions, simply because our minds and our tools are all limited by the 4 dimensional space they are in.

Part of the problem with modern physics is that a lot of its propositions are like God - things that by their nature are impossible to detect or study.

Because of the influence of the mystic/physicist Bohr and the Copenhagen school, physics is almost pure mathematics these days. Most of the practical discoveries these days attributed to physicists are the result of more experimental physics rather than the mathematical physics.
