I recently purchased a new Ford Fusion and am very happy with it. Zero defects and the fit and finish is excellent. Consumer Reports gives it top marks in predicted reliability, safety and their highest buy recommendation.

I also looked at the Chevy Impala first, and thoroughly liked it. I would have purchased, but dealers around here only had 4 or 5 on the lot, and none came with the colors and configurations I wanted. Made me mad. Each dealer would have like 30 Equinoxes, 25 Cobalts, 35 Malibus, and 4 Impalas.

Not a big fan of the Chevy Malibu, although the upcoming 2008 model looks real good. If you are looking at economy cars, I'd pick the Chevy Cobalt over the Ford Focus.

I wouldn't recommend the Ford Five Hundred. Took it for a test drive and hated the way it drove, although considering they are closing out that model, it was fantastically discounted and came with lots of luxuries. If you don't mind the way it drives, it's a lot of car for the money.

Basically, I think the Chevy's outclass the Fords, except the Fusion which is really exceptional.

Chevy

I own both. I have a 1999 Ford that I bought new and it has 65,000 miles on it and has gone through 3 transmissions. I also own a 1995 Chevy that I bought new, it has 163,000 miles on it and have never had any problems with it yet, other than replacing the battery. I also own the best of both worlds, a 1935 Ford with Chevy drivetrain. Ford style with Chevy dependability. Ultimately the choice is up to you, but I would go with a Chevy

The mustang is a great car, if you want rear drive and sporty, the Fusion is a great sedan if you want to go that route, Chevys are good but their engine architecture is still old school when compared to Ford's
