Eric Van Thienen is correct. The label "freedom fighters" was used incorrectly at one time for both the Mujahedin in Afghanistan, and the Contras in Nicaragua. At the time they were they terrorists that the U.S. agreed with, funded, and supplied arms to. Look under Nestor Makhno for a true freedom fighter.

yes it is a loaded question.
essentially the name is used to describe anti-nazi armed opposition during WW2. Simply put, when faced with genocide on a massive scale, some people chose to die fighting.
Of course nowadays just about every madman with a cause would like to be known as "freedom fighter". Ironic really, especially in the case of those who would enslave others (be it in the name of "revolution" or "religion").

Best known fake? Che Guevara

Least known real thing? Jonas Savimbi
