You have two options.

The best option is to get a router with an integrated Local Area Network (LAN) switch (usually this has 4 LAN ports built in). The router connects to the broadband modem. The pcs connect to the router.

I presume you have a dynamic IP address from your ISP. Configure the router for dynamic WAN IP. Also configure the router to provide LAN IP addresses via DHCP. Carefully read and follow your router's manual on how to do this. Also check and see if you need a cross or straight cable linking modem to router WAN port.

All pcs connect to the router LAN ports. All pcs need to have their network connection set up to obtain IP and DNS automatically.

After the router config is completed, turn off the modem and the router and all network pcs for at least 0.5 minute. Then turn on modem and 15 or more seconds later turn on router and 30 or more seconds later turn on pcs. You should be able to run fine. If you have problems, write again telling us what you did.

Alternatively you can buy wireless adapters for pcs and a wireless router. In this case the router uses unlicensed radio frequencies to communicate to the pcs and avoids LAN wires. Wireless security is an issue and you need to completely and carefully use all the security steps outlined or you will be compromised. Wireless is also touchy and signal drop with minor movement of the pc is often seen.

The other option is Internet Connection Sharing which is available in Windows 2000 and XP. You need a second network card in pc # 1. One network connection connects to modem and has its IP address set up to be obtained automatically. The second network connection on pc # 1 is static and I suggest you set it at 192.168.2.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.2.2. On PC # 2 set the IP as static and I suggest 192.168.2.3, subnet 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.2.2, DNS 192.168.2.2 (same as default gateway). Use an ethernet cross cable to link pc 1 and pc 2; you may need a cross cable to link pc 1 to modem too.

Again, if you have trouble, tell us what you did in another message and we can assist further

You'll need to purchase one additional piece of hardware, a router. You can get it for anywhere from $20-$150, depending on the capabilities. Here in my neck of the woods, we only have a Staples. But whatever works for you.

Most routers will have around 5 Ethernet ports on the back of it. One for the source Internet cable (from your modem), the others to hook up either desktop pcs or laptops.

If you have two computers, then you'll need two network patch cables. Usually around $10 a piece.

So your Internet hookup will go like this:

1. From the wall jack (either cable, phone, etc.) to the modem supplied by your Internet Service Provider
2. You'll have a cable connecting your modem to the router (make sure you plug this cable in to the correct port on the back of the router)
3. Plug your 1st computer into one of the numbered ports. Same goes for the 2nd one.
4. You're done!

Just like that you've set up a LAN (local area network) where one Internet connection is being used by two different computers.

And don't worry, what one computer looks at on the Internet is completely independent from what the other one looks at. Kinda like watching cable tv on different tvs.

Hope this helps!

You need one more piece of hardware: It is called a router.

You will also need some cables.

The normal setup is:

Your broadband connection comes into the house via cable or phone line.

1. You connect that wire/cable to the modem that your ISP (Verizon; Comcast; etc.) provided to you.

2. You need to run a cable from the Modem to the input port on the router.

3. Run a cable from one port on the router to one of your PC's.

4. Run another cable from one port on the router to the second PC.

That is it. No muss no fuss. You just need to purchase the router and appropriate cable lengths so you can connect the router to your two PC's. You may also need to contact your ISP Tech Support to get the accounts set up and for email accounts.

Good luck.

Buy a linksys router at your local computer universe store. Plug the broadband modem into the router and then connect the two computers to the router. Good to go!
