1. 5(x-1) +3 = 13
2. 5x - 5 +3 =13
3. 5x -2 = 13
4. 5x = 15
5. x = 3

1. Some number minus 1 times 5, plus three equals 13.
2. Solve for parenthesis first; multiply 5 by both numbers inside the parenthesis.
3. Complete -5+3 = -2
4. Isolate the variable on one side of the equation, move -2 to the other side (becomes +2 when it switches over to make 15)
5. Divide both sides of the equation by 5.
6. Check the answer, solve for x.

#1 problem: 5(x-1) +3 = 13
- multiply 5 to x and 3 for they are in a parenthesis... so , that makes is 5x - 5 because 5 time x is 5x and 5 times 1 is 5. copy the minus sign in between. so that makes it 5x -5.
#2 next equation: 5x - 5 + 3 = 13
#3 compute the numbers without the x
next equation: 5x -2 =13 ---- because -5 + 3 = -2... so it will be 5x -2 =13
#4 transfer the -2 to other side of the equation and change the negative sign into positive . so , it will be 5x = 13 +2
#5 next equation is 5x = 15
#6 to eliminate 5 and make the equation into x only... you divide both sides by 5 which makes it 5x divided by 5 is X ... and on the other side of the equation, 15 divided by 5 is 3... that's how you get the answer. you must divide both sides with the same number.. which, in this equation is 5 so as to make 5x into x...
#7 your answer will become : x = 3
#8 to check it... 5(x-1) + 3= 13
so if x is 3 .... 5 ( 3 - 1 ) + 3 = 13
5 times 3 is 15.. and 5 times 1 is 5...
which makes it 15 - 5 +3 = 13
so, 15 minus 5 is 10 ... 10 plus 3 is 13... which makes the equation equal to 13 .... =)
that's how you check if x is indeed correct.. so X is 3... =)

I have no idea what grade are you in but if you know multiplication and addition this would be a piece of cake.
(Take Math as a challenge.Its nothing to be scared of really if you really pay attention to your teacher in your class and maybe even ask her/him for guidance whenever you need help.Life really becomes easier if we ask the right questions to the right person at the right time!)

5(x-1), if multiplied would be 5x-5
So the equation would be
5x-5+3=13
since 5 is the bigger number than 3 ...substracting 5 from 3 gives -2.So the equation is
5x-2=13
Carry the -2 to the right hand side which becomes a +2
5x= 13+2
5x=15
x=15/5
therefore x=5.

Good luck.

5(x - 1) +3 =13
5x - 5 + 3 =13 >>> multiply 5 by x and 1
5x - 2 = 13 >>> combine like numbers. -5 + 3 = -2
5x = 15 >>> - 2 +2 =0 and 2 + 13 =15 add 2 to each side of equation
x=3 >>> divide each side by 5

Check yourself 5(3 - 1) +3 = 13
15 - 5 + 3 +13

Get it now?? Let me know if this helps

The trick to this equation is to get all numbers on one side and all variables on the other.

1) 5(x-1) means multiply everything in the parenthesis by 5, so expand it to be 5x - 5

Eq: 5x - 5 + 3 = 13

2) Now, move every number to the right. To do so, you have to change the sign. so if -5 is on the left, +5 has to be on the right

Eq: 5x = 13 + 5 - 3

3) Now add up the terms on the right to simplify

5x = 15

4) now to find out what x equals, you need to divide both sides of the equation by 5. 5x/5=x and 15/5 = 3

Eq: x = 3

There you go, x=1

You start by subtracting 3 from both sides of the equal sign
5(x-1)+3=13
-3 -3
Then you divide each side by 5
5(x-1)=10
/5 /5
Finally you add 1
x-1=2
+1+1
So your answer is:
x=3

To figure for x is simple once you realize that all you are doing is simple math just work the problem backwards from how you would figure it if there were no x.

5(x-1) + 3 = 13
5x - 5 + 3 = 13
- 3 I - 3
5x - 5 = 10
+ 5 I + 5
5x = 15
5/5 15/5

x = 3 =)
