Americans = EVERYONE who lives on the American Continent...which expands from Canada to Argentina.

Its popular culture to say "Americans" when we mean people from the United States. Everyone knows you arent talking about a Canadian or a Mexican or a Brazilian. There isn't a proper word unless you want to be wierd and say "United States American".

People who are citizens of the USA are Americans. Citizens of Canada are Canadians, and people from Mexico are Mexicans. Just because we all live on the continent of North America, doesn't mean we don't all have our own country/nationality.

Americans is commonly understood to mean those in the United States. There are those who get hyper about technicalities, but in general, it's commonly understood to mean those in the United States.

Otherwise, we wouldn't have the differentiation of "Canadians" and "Mexicans." Call a Canadian or a Mexican an "American" and they'll likely set you straight very quickly.

Hope that helps.

Well, "Americans" is widely used...but in some Spanish-speaking North and South American countries, they use the term "estadounidense" which basically means United Statians, I guess...
I've thought about this, also...Technicially speaking, you'd be called "American" if your continent has the word "America" in it, but it's just taken to signify the US of America...

United States citizens?

2007-05-31 04:21:19 · answer #8 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Probably because they hail from the United States of "America" and no other country carries "America" in their country's name. Therefore, they can rightfully call themselves "Americans."

BTW, when I was in the U.K., people would ask me, "You're from America?" "Where are you from in America?" I thought this was strange because I would always refer to it as the U.S. or "The States." So, as far as I'm concerned, to others from other countries, the term "America" or "American" usually denotes one from the USA, rightly or wrongly.
