sq. ft. is the unit used for area while ft. is for measuring unit of length
for example you have a square table and measure it from the top left corner to the top right corner you are measuring for it's length (let's say you got a 5ft measurement)
then if you square it you get the area of the table, (25 sq. ft.)

A foot is 12inches right. So a foot is just like if you draw a 12 inch line on paper or on the floor or wherever you like. Its one-dimensional. A Square foot is when you draw a square in which each four sides are 12 inches long, or basically, a foot long. So you have a square foot. A square that is a foot long on all sides.
