I have a Bernina Aurora 440. I can disconnect the foot pedal and run it with an start/stop button. It also has a knee operated lever to raise/lower the pressure foot.

I also grew up learning to sew on my mother's old Singer 401. It was in a cabinet and operated with a knee push lever, no foot pedal. I didn't even know about foot pedals until they bought me my own sewing machine for my H.S. graduation.

Almost all sewing electric sewing machines in the 50's had knee pedals, the pedal was mounted on the inside leg of the sewing machine cabinet. I am sure you can mount the foot pedal of your machine onto an inside leg of your sewing table. If you don't have a handy-man available to do the task, check with a sewing machine repair man.

I recently purchased a White Quilting Star model 1780 and was surprised to see i did'nt have to use a foot pedal. I have only used it once since I bought the machine. I really like the ease of just pressing the button and not have to worry about my dogs stepping on the pedal.

There are machines that you can use the upper part of your leg to opperate or you can push a button. I know that Bernina has a leg option and I think that Brother offers the push button. But check with your local sewing machine shop. I am sure there are other manufacturers that offer this type of option and they can help you choose a machine that works best for you.

Agree that ebay is a GREAT idea, also check the manufacturers website. They may sell the extra pedal to use. I'd not suggest using a pedal for another model, that could cause issues.
