Jamaica is having some rain... I checked around MBJ (Montego Bay Jamaica's airport code) and they show steady thunderstorms through this entire week. So I am guessing you may be in for some stormy weather unless this clears up.
If you are staying at a resort, most of them have sunshine and hurricane clauses. My husband and I went to St. Anne's Bay for our honeymoon, and the resort we stayed at guaranteed that if the sun did not come out for part of the day we would be given a free night's stay for each occurrence. While we did experience rain it was never for the entire day.
You are traveling during the start of hurricane season, so it is hard to say you won't have a ton more rain to deal with. Even with the rain I imagine you will have a pretty good time!
A few notes.... the previous poster did mention about the crime and I'd like to elaborate a bit. We rode on a free shuttle from the airport to our resort. We had a stop so we could use the bathroom and purchase a drink (red stripe is the number one beer there, and is native to Jamaica... if you like beer then you should try it). At this stop, before my husband even got 10 feet from the bus a man offered to sell him Ganja (weed). Politely say no and go on to do whatever you were going to. No matter what you might be told, it is not legal to buy or use the drug in Jamaica!
You should only go places with tour groups because that is the safest way. The tour guides will keep you safe and on the right paths. I have heard from others that took some of the shopping trips that they sometimes felt cornered and pressured, so make sure to stay with at least one other person. Most hotels and resorts offer access to these tours (at a fee).
Respect is important in Jamaica. Try not to disrespect people, even when you are telling them no to something, like not wanting to purchase items. If you are not used to haggling you may feel a bit put off because when you are not in a hotel or resort store, but at a road side stand or hut, you tend to haggle for most items. The prices start high. Do not pay full price, and don't call an item cheaply made just because you want it for less. Focus on the fact that you only have X amount of dollars, or you can't spend more than X for the gift. They won't agree to sell it to you unless they are happy with the price. And I do suggest you pick up something as a souvenir that will be meaningful to you... we got a pair of love birds/parrot looking birds and had the man carve Jamaica 2007 in it for us. We did not have to leave our resort to shop as on certain days the allowed local vendors to have a spot on the plaza.
Jamaican Time is different... sure it runs at the same speed, but the people living there do not. If you have an issue, it will most likely not be fixed immediately but it will be fixed. We were supposed to receive a honeymoon plate of fruit and champagne in our room at arrival, but there was a mix up with the resort and our travel agent. The resort fixed it the second or third day that we were there. They do care, and it’s not an insult to you that they don't get something done immediately... it’s just standard for things to be on "Jamaican time." Usually, you are having such a great time anyway you don't notice.
A few more points that don't really fit into their own paragraphs:
-Tip baggage handlers 1 dollar per bag, and tip your shuttle driver 5 dollars if you have one. They palm the money and pocket it (although they are allowed to accept tips, it’s a sign of respect to not look at what you have given immediately, and they tend to be in the middle of working other people's baggage when you hand it to them).
- Try Rum Cream. If you like it, make sure you buy some at Sangsters International Airport. It’s in the duty free shops. The workers at the store can specify for you how many bottles of what you can have duty free (and duty tends to be reasonably cheap on the alcohol). We picked up more rum cream because it tends to be very hard to find around where we live in the USA.
- Don't forget sunscreen!
- Consider bringing an air freshener for your room. It's not completely necessary but it’s a nice touch. We liked it, and one of the maids even told us how lovely it smelled in our room.
- If you are staying at an all inclusive resort, bring candy to tip the maids and bartenders! They love chocolates and other sweets, and they won't get fired for taking that.
- Ask for a dirty banana. I imagine more than our resort served them... it’s a nice cold refreshing drink (with some alcohol, but not so much you really taste it).
- Have a great time! Wish we were going, even with the rain!

Oh Jamaica a place of my heart. I always go to Jamaica because there is something that keep pulling me back. Be careful going out at nights and ask hotel employees for help about going around the island. You will be fine and enjoy some Jamaica culture and foods.

I went to Jamaica a couple years ago. I really have no desire to go back- just didn't like it much! But again, it might have just been the area I was in! I hope your experience is better and that you have fun!

What is happening...crime and lots of it. Jamaica is one of the most dangerous Caribbean islands. Be very careful, don't spend much time in the cities, don't drive around at night and don't go anywhere you don't know.
Have fun anyway...
