My daughter stopped using it just before her 2nd birthday and all I did was slowly wean her off. She could only have it when she was sleeping and then slowly take it away then.

if you're lucky they will give it up on their own when they don't need it anymore. But, if you are always giving it to them, the habit is harder to break. try using it just at bed time. Keep it in the crib and no where else -- except maybe the car, if they are going to go to sleep in the car. actually, not having it in the car even if they are going to sleep there is a good way for the baby to get used to not having it needed to go to sleep. My son used a pacifier for a while but, when he would "lose" it during the night, I'd have to go find it and that got difficult in the dark so I let him have his thumb which is better if you don't care how long they use it becasue it's attached! The "advantage" of the pacifier is that you can control when and where it gets used. If you don't mid just letting the baby have the pacifier as long as they want, just do it that way and the kid will give it up whenever they choose and that's olay too.

We stopped at 8 months, it was to the point where she was wanting it all the time, if she saw one she wanted it and would steal other babies' pacifiers (I have an in-home daycare)
We started off by cutting the tips, which basically just made her mad...she'd put it in her mouth, take it out and look at it, then just get MAAAD. So after 2 days of that we just threw them out completely, out of sight out of mind. She cried at nap and bedtime (about 5-10 minutes) but we just let her cry it out...she has a bunny blanket and she learned to stuff it's ears in her mouth to help her feel better :-)
She is now 9 months old and she is off the bottle now too, completely on the sippy cup. She's doing great with that too
Hope this helps and good luck! :-)

my baby stopped using a pacifier when he was 4 1/2 months. the only reason he stopped using it was because he caught a cold and couldn't breath threw his nose. after he got better i went to give it back to him but he didn't want it anymore. i would try just to give your baby the pacifier when she or he is sleeping. see how he or she can do without during the day

Melissa was 4 before she put it down completely, we wher talking about her going to school and she didnt want anyone to know she still used her sucker becuase she was a big girl, she put it down on her own and we never had a problem, she stopped using it during the day on her own arount 2, dont let people try to force you to take it way, it will not hurt her teeth , she cant put smaller things in her mouth and chock and its better than a thumb, which is harder to break, you always have a thumb with you

My son turned 2 in February and he still uses his....but only in his room. It isn't allowed out of his room at all. It used to be in the car....and in his room....but we broke the car thing when he was like 1 1/2. He was off the bottle at a year and is very smart. The binky will go very soon. I am thinking he doesn't really need it anymore.....he just uses it because it is there. I plan to have him toss it in the trash himself so he feels like he controlled the situation and just never give him one again. Hope this helps. And Good Luck!

My oldest son was eight months old. He had just started teething and it hurt to have the pacifier. So when his teeth did come though we didn't give it back. We didn't want to ruin his teeth, and by that time he forgot about it anyways.

I had the hardest time with that! My son was around 3 ( I know, I know..lol) anyway I cut tiny holes in his pacifier, I started with one and put more until he got no enjoyment out of it anymore because it would just colapse and stick together... it worked like a charm for me and in just a few days he was over it

My oldest son was 2 and a half (bad I know) I just took it away and said he was a big boy and didnt need it anymore...he cried for a bit, but that was that...it was rough getting him to bed that night, but he fell asleep after about a half hour...and he hasnt had it since and hasnt asked for it....my youngest son was about 8 months...he never really took to it in the first place, so I just stopped giving it to him and he didnt worry about it at all...my problem with him is the "baba" hes 13 months now and its hard getting it away, we do a sippy cup most of the day but when hes tired he wants his bottle...once he perfects the sippy I will take the bottle away completely.

My daughter was 10 months old and it was cold turkey, but not by choice. She lost while we were on a road trip, and I swear that was the longest 8 hour trip ever! It took her about a week to get used to not having it, but after that she was fine.
