Maybe I heard it wrong, but everyone goes by that #. Why not 80 or 82? Too hot?

I don't know about 78, I think that's fine for senior citizens but for most I would think 68 degrees would be best. I keep mine there year round that way my furnace never goes on in the summer.

I don't know that it is the most energy efficient. If you are talking about A/C, the higher the temp, the less electricity you will use. At 78 degrees, it feels comfortable, not too hot and not too cold. I think it is a matter of choice.

According to the WHO [World Health Organisation] the optimum working temperature for man and machine is 22 degrees centigrade. This would convert to approx. 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
