run msconfig from the start / run menu. This will give you a list of startup options, i.e. programs that are starting up when your computer boots. If you have like 15 little icons down by your clock, you probably need to clean this up. Go in there and check off the programs that don't need to run, like updater programs for Adobe, or auto start itunes, etc...

You can also go into computer properties by holding down the windows button on your keyboard and hitting the pause/break button. Click on the advanced tab, and click the setting button under performance.Choose the 'adjust for best performance' option.

Next, defrag the hard drive...

All of these things put together can help, but if you have an aging computer, get some ram upgrades.

First, uninstall any programs that you don't use anymore. Remove all the programs from the startup folder that you don't use every day. Then download and run CCleaner, including the "check for issues" part of the program. Now download and run AdAware. Also download and run Spybot S&D. If Ad-aware misses it, Spybot will catch it. IF you aren't afraid of tweeking your computer download and run Process Explorer. Now run Disk Cleanup and De-fragment your hard drive(both programs came with windows). Run these four programs frequently and defragment at least once a month. Then buy the max memory your computer can handle. Memory makes the biggest difference in how your computer runs. Still not happy? You may be able to upgrade the video card on your laptop. Most video cards also come with 'overclocking' software to speed up the CPU and video card. Be careful though. Overclocking can overheat the computer if you are too aggressive.

Burn some music and videos that you have to a CD or DVD. That will free up some more space. If you get low on space, it will run very slow. Also, make sure that you are not running low on RAM.

Make sure you have the most updated BIOS version for your motherboard. Many newer BIOS versions have cut back on the amount of POST-checks run during boot-up.

Less checks could translate into quicker boot-up and shut down.
