Besides, or in addition to, buying expensive home protection systems, what kind of things are legal inside your home to trip up/capture/ intruders. Are there non-lethal booby-traps that are legal?

Apppreciate the answers to far, but our legal system is crazy as we all know. I think homeowners have been the ones to go to jail for causing harm or death to intruders. I think the laws are restrictive because sometimes law enforcement has to enter a house and you sure don't want to be nailing them!!

It might be a state to state decision. If you shoot someone inside your house you better make sure you won't be the one going to the slammer.

regerugg, that's why I'm asking if there are any legal booby-traps that don't hurt people, just stop or trap them.

yes, i initially stated non-lethal and something that won't get me put in jail. I'm not 100% sure a dog biting a burglar won't get ME in trouble either. I guess there are none unless someone's devised some extravagant net trap system.

non lethal, non harming, catch and release technology...
hmmm. i did see an entry way system that captured criminals in a bullet proof 4 foot by 4 foot entry way. if they didn't enter a code. system calls alarm company with photo capture technology. alarm company can remote release to police while you are away.
same as locking the armed robber in a convenience store till the cops arrive while the clerk is in a bullet proof counter area.
other ideas...
other idea is stinky... literally. aerosols that smell bad or are noxious in quantities. set them up to deploy if you are not the one who is in your house. it will run them off
spray marker Bobbie traps with permanent ink.
ultra loud shrieking alarms that drive out burglars.
pre recorded sounds of...
man with pump shotgun screaming "I'm gonna git me bugler tonight!" should run them off the first few times
dog growling at door or window, scratching sounds and maybe a wiggling curtain device
sign on door says: Warning: reformed cannibal lives here, no temptations please!"

Give me a break - no-one is saying people will be "allowed" to murder burglars. What is being mooted is that the law will be made clear that should a homeowner defend themselves then unless they use totally unnecessary force then they will not be charged (as has happened previously). If that means that a burglar has a knife and during a struggle the burglar is the one killed then as long as it was reasonable for the homeowner to defend themselves in that way then it will be classed as self defense. How exactly can the law say what force is acceptable?? That is just plain stupid. What would be acceptable in one instance would not be in another. Quite simply if someone has broken in and is threatening you, your family or property then there should be no issues with you protecting yourself using whatever force is necessary, including deadly force if required. In the case of Hussian, he would still be charged and convicted. He was not under threat when he beat the guy senseless. He chased the guy down the street, stopping to get assistance first. The law has ALWAYS been that reasonable force can be used. What has happened recently though is that we have to many idiots in the police, CPS and judiciary who care more about the "rights" of criminals and not enough about the victims.

Usually it's a member of the family that will get booby trapped. Go for a good security system.

Fences, locks, burglar alarms, surveillance cameras, lights that come on automatically are legal and are deterrents. Dogs are legal. Any kind of booby trap is not legal. You can be held civilly liable if you intentionally harm anyone.

You can be sued if a burgler gets hurt braking into your house.
I read in Readers Diguest, where a family got sued because a burgler broke into a second floor window and when he was going down the stairway he stepped on a skate that one of the children failed to put away. He broke his back and was crippled.

I would guess ANY non-lethal booby trap you set, would be legal..as long as it did not result in say, dismemberment.
Too bad people these days worry about hurting someone who is TRESSPASSING on THEIR property and out to do THEM harm....criminals really DO have more rights, huh?
Geez..what a world we live in...

My theory -
Whatever contraptions you happen to have in your home are ment for personal use. If someone breaks in illegally and happens to be injured or killed by said contraption, it is the consiquences they suffer for entering the home.
Some people have a baseball bat or something simular.

I imagine that if they are breaking into your house and you have a no trespassing sign, i think you could probably get away with anything. Maybe a bear trap, that would be freakin sweet!..
