When and why did NHL teams switch to wearing the solid color jerseys at home games and white jerseys on the road? And is this switch temporary or permanant?

I like the dark at home.
That's the way it originally was back in the day; the NHL only changed to white at home in the 70's . The switch back was to accomodate the teams that had a 3rd jersey. Since all of the 3rd's are dark in color, if a team wanted to wear one they would do so on the road, which meant having to pack two uniform kits for every player instead of one. When you wear dark at home, the home team could wear the 3rd's whenever they wanted.
My personal feeling is that the darker jerseys are more attractive to fans; they like the color scheme. Plus the team that wears white blends into the ice too much. I think wearing dark jerseys at home is a good thing.
In the ECHL the teams wear white at home, but after the All-Star Game they switch to dark.

There are too many black and red teams. I think they should go back to home white, its more intimidating having an away team coming to your arena wearing their team color. I've said it before, the Sabres jerseys SUCK, yet they have the vintage jerseys that are great. The Sabres should wear those vintage jerseys full time, I like the Avalanche alterantes with Colorado going diagonal down the front. The White Senators jerseys are very good with looking traditional. There are too many teams with flashy jerseys when they should be distinct like th original 6 teams. Look at the Red Wings, they have red jerseys with a white stripe on the sleeve and thr bottom, and they're great, then you got teams like the Predators.

They did it about 3 years ago and the teams didn't start doing it the NHL said they had to and Why i don't know

This back-and-forth jersey color has been going on for years. As for it being permanent, it's doubtful. Sooner or later they'll switch back again.

during the second half of the 75th anniversary season (91-92), this was tried as an experiment, and it stuck. not sure who thought it was a great idea, but someone important clearly did.

Thats the way it was during the original six era. Dark was home, white was away....
