With any website you own, you can choose to use the "www" version of your website or the non-www version. Actually, you can use both (and most websites do - unknowingly).
The best answer I can give you is that they decided that more of the links pointing to their website use the non-www version of their site. In order to get the most value from their links (in terms of helping them rank well in the Search Engines), they used a redirect to take anyone who types in the "www" version of their website to the non-www version.
What this does is make all of your "link love" flow to one consistent domain.

The www part is just pointing to a specific server that is hosting the site. If there is only one server on that domain name, the www can be omitted and it will still get to the page fine.

Most modern browsers will automatically put in the lead charecters. Example; when you type in www.yahoo.com, the browser actually fills in the rest of the address which is the http://. It is a convenience thing in that most websites begin with www.
The other explanation is that a website that shows to be joesmoe.tripod.com is actually a different animal that is though related to the first answer. In this type of address you are dealing with a sub-domain within a larger domain. You have a website hosted on tripod whose name is joesmoe, so that the tripod server can send you directly to the joesmoe directory you type in joesmoe.tripod.com if you try to type in www.joesmoe.tripod.com you will get an error as there is no such domain named joesmoe.tripod.com the site is at the domain named tripod.com. Tkae a look at Wikipedia for a more info.

as a certified web master for 15 years, the question can be answered either easitly or dificult. so I will explain it the easy way.
the www, and the non www are actialy two differant address. like fingers, they point to two differant places, but you can have them both point to the same address inside the server. the reason that this is available is so that you cna have a www for the internet and a non www for an intranet in case you have your server inside your office or want to have an inside communication.

theres really no reason.
for instance:
yahoo.com
is the same as
www.yahoo.com
which would also be the same as
http://www.yahoo.com
