There are actually many things that can stop or delay a period. The most common is pregnancy, of course, But there are others some people don't realise have an aeffect on your body.
Stress is a big one. If you have high levels of stress, your hormones will get screwed up, making your period irregular.
Wieght, as well. If you are over weight or under weight, your period could be a little off.
Anemia doesn't have anything to do with missing your period. Anemia is an iron deficiency that can cause dizziness and fatigue, not messing up hormones.
And if you presently have any type of birth control, mostly the pills though, the synthetic hormones are oftern the culprit for missing a period.
There are a few good websites that have a lot of info on this subject.

you'd get a shorter answer if you asked - What doesn't cause menstral cycles to be late? Any type of stress, illness, hormone imbalance can cause a change in your cycle. If your not pregnant and it keeps going see your doctor.
