My friend bought a dvd drive (it's dual layer writer) and was trying to install it into computer I sold him. However the drive can only read and write CD's if we tried inserting DVD's (both data and movie) it either reads it as empty disc or throws an error that the drive is unaccessible.
I tried the drive on my computer and it works fine and reads DVD's...
What could be the problem? (The computer he has was mine and I had DVD writer (different one and it was only single layer) and it worked...)
windows recognized this drive as DVD writer, but it doesnt read DVD's :(

Just for the info the computer is slightly older (Duron 1GHz with, 256M ram...) if that does matter...

ok im gonna asume that the pc you want to install the dvd writer in has only one hard drive if it does and if you are using the same cable that is going in your harddrive make sure that the dvd writer is set to slave because you cannot have 2 master drives running off the same IDE channel, so if you move the jumper to slave it will work. most writers require you to either remover the jumper or put it in the middle pin to set it to slave . . .

if he has 2 hard drives keep the c: drive as a master and make your second drive a slave connect them to the same IDE cable and then connect your dvd writer to another cable on slave

Try Nero software for DVD burning and Power DVD for movie viewing. Works for me all the time on my laptop and desktops.

Make sure you have the correct drivers. You may have to go to the manufacturer's website.
