Everything I read is two or more computers, and one is hard-wired to the cable internet modem. I would like to be able to use my laptop anywhere in my house and use my Comcast cable high speed internet. The laptop is the only computer in the house. What equipment do I need? The standard router seems to need at least one computer hardwired. Thanks!!!

Some (but not all), wireless routers require (and most recommend), that you hard wire one computer to configure the wireless router. After the wireless router is configured, you can disconnect the hard wire and run entirely wireless.

You need a wireless router, it does not need to have a computer hard-wired to it. You will plug the cable modem into the WAN port on the router. The router will automatically assign an IP Address to the wireless laptop and route it to the Internet.

*Most* D-Link routers on the market can be set-up for wired or wireless. You can purchse a wireless only router if you wish.

In any case, remember to set your router up so that a war-driver can't access it.

You would connect the modem directly to the wireless router, and turn it on (remember to set the security settings). Your laptop would then be able to connect. Note, however, that you may have to actually wire the laptop to the router at first to correctly install it.

Just a wireless router and the connecting cables! Do you have a wireless card in the laptop(built-in)?

you need:
- cable modem
- wireless router
- laptop needs wireless transceiver, either built in, or an add on (usb, pcmcia)

cable modem ---> router ---> wireless laptop
if a second computer is in house, it can use the same router with a cable, or wireless as well. it would also need a wireless transceiver (usb or pci)
