The distance between Sharjah to Makkah (Mecca) is hardly 1530 kms / 951 miles. The road is safe and comfortable. You should get the travel permit from Sharjah traffic dept prior to leave.

You will drive from Shargah to Dammam (East of Saudi Arabia) I don't know how long is it to get there, but then from Dammam to Riyadh (around 400 km). And then from Riyadh to Makkah through Taif (approximately 900 km). There are two roads from Riyadh but the shortest to Makka is through Taif while the other one is better if you want to stop by Madinah. It is not a good idea to rest in between Riyadh and Makkah (except for few hours) while you can stay either in Riyadh or Dammam.

Best of luck

If your bringing small children to Mecca you should go on an off season when there are few pilgrims. Mecca is dangerous during the pilgrimage and many children are seperated from their parents.
There is a road, you can look at the Mecca tourism site or yahoo or google maps to see the roads.

I have heard it is a 9 hrs or so drive from the capital, Abu Dhabi. A friend of mine went. Just be sure your tyres and car is in good condition and you have enough snacks and water etc for the journey. You can make stops on the ways and rest as I understand . Be careful of heavy vehicles. You could ask any of the tourist offices for advice and a map.
