Depends upon the kind of finish. If you have a modern clearcoat finish, you should NEVER polish the car. Polish is abrasive and will destroy the finish. Just wash it with a commercial car wash detergent (never dish soap!) using a soft woolen mitt. Dry with a chamois. Then apply a coat of any high quality automotive wax and buff to a shine with a terry cloth towel.

Never wax a car with clear coat - that will ruin your clear coat, and make it hazy looking.
The correct method is a polish which can breathe and will nor harm your clear coat, it is not an abrasive, a rubbing compound is a mild abrasive and will take out scratches and orange peel.

The warm soapy water like Dawn will rid you car of all grease and wax buildup.
Several washes may be needed if waxing a lot.

I hate when a mechanic tells you how to do body prep and buffing.
