Claire is right, swimming is not the BEST weight loss program but it DOES work. The theory as to why that swimming does not promote rapid weight loss the way running and cycling do is pretty flimsy at best. It seems to be related to the better heat conduction of water, but there are number of reasons suspected.
As Reported by Scott on TimedFinals:
"Water cools the body much faster than air, and most researchers believe that subsequently the body aims to maintain a layer of fat under the skin for insulation. Also, some researchers also believe that the metabolism of the body increases at higher body temperature, burning more food energy. Again, during swimming the body is cooled down by the surrounding water, reducing the metabolism, and subsequently the amount of food energy burnt. This assumption is also not yet proven by research.
My answer? Be conscious of what you eat and if and when you can. Although research says swimming may not be the best for burning fat, any form of exercise, be it swimming, running, or weight lifting, is good if the alternative is doing nothing. Losing weight is all about burning more calories than you eat, and any type of exercise, swimming included, will get the job done.
If you enjoy swimming, then stick with it. It’s more important to be consistent with an exercise program you enjoy than to be inconsistent with one you hate."

It's been proven that swimming isn't actually the best thing for losing weight but they think that could be down to creating a big appetite after a session and eating too much. It is great however for toning muscles. It's impact free and exercises all of your body as well as increasing your lung capacity.

if your really in to it and your competitive you can do all those things. if you really want to get/lose those things then you have to make sure you try really really hard and do things like wall sits and push ups and curl up andsit ups and super mans. if you just want to stay in the pool try the butterfly for a long distance. and do that over and over again a billion times over. keep your head in it and try to really lose your weight and gain that tone arm look. dont go over board or you'll look like a greasy body builder. dont get that look!
