Poor education. If people cannot be informed and make intelligent choices, then they can only vote for whoever looks nice on TV, or has a pleasant sounding name.

Democracy with the help of itself, can't be a failure; that's the equipment. some answerers have commented on the prevalent of the folk elected, yet in certainty the traditional public can pick purely FROM between the applicants provided for election. that's the place each and all the events have failed the voters. for various motives, like caste, vote financial employer, appeasement of minorities and so on., the events have not centred on sturdy and clean applicants, and that they have spoiled the equipment. yet, with all its failures, democracy is lots extra suitable than an autocracy, tyrannic or monarchic rule which do no longer tolerate any opposition. may well be, in some years, whilst the recent era takes over the reign, the equipment will strengthen. In democracy, a minimum of there is an danger of the various events coming to ability in spite of the undeniable fact that.Howeveer, i do no longer comprehend the way u got here to the top that folk are 'retarded'. The world of politics is no longer a place where people lead a country, the world of politics is now a place where smart, cunning people go to get money. Greed most likely, even the communists give their politicians money. The cause of failure of democracy is how the pay rises of the politicians caused it to be a new playing field for the con men and tricksters, flooding out the true leaders and idealists.

Politicians, no matter who, want to be in government for money, greed and not for your well being what-so-ever. Straight away, that's a failure. If they mess up, they should get sued and jailed. Get the decision wrong for going to war, get jailed. Don't want that responsibility, don't do it. They get enough back handers and expenses for the risk.

Secondly, it's up to the Queen to think "What a crap job Blair is doing" and dissolve her parliment and get a new one.

Lastly, whats the difference between a dictatorship and democracy? I suppose you keep your head under a democracy but apart from that, the bloke in-charge does whatever he wants.

Democracy is believed to be :government of the people,
" by the people, and
" for thepeople."
But in actual practice people no more exercise the power to
elect their reps. or the government. The party bosses and
money- bags fix every thing.People are led to believe that they have exercised their franchise! The jews of Wall street
fix the President of USA and the Americans vote him to power. The present incumbent has proved how dangerous the game has become!
The media is expected to remain neutral and guide the voters to make the right choice.More often than not, it is the first casuality. The recent media prediction regarding UP state assembly election has proved that the press is also NOT free and unfallible.

When you say democracy I believe you refer to the political model exercised in Britain and the U.S. as opposed to the original true Athenian model. The two party system which operates here and in America is doomed to fail it`s population simply because it concentrates political power in the hands of a few individuals who are then free to start wars and restrict freedoms even though a large part of the populace may oppose this. The solution to this appears to be proportionally representative elections which result in a parliaments comprised of a wide variety of political parties. The power of the executive is diluted as they are required to achieve a wide consensus for their actions.
The truth of this can be seen in the way that the European mainland democracies have become moderate and peaceful whilst the U.K. and U.S have become increasingly right wing and belligerent.

Whenever you get one brain to think for every 200 bellies to feed you have democracy. The sad part of it is that the citizens of this great country sit back and allow it.

If your question is aimed at America I must state that we are not a democracy. We are a republic and there is huge difference.

Most americans do not understand that.

Democracy fails when the citizenry stops being diligent. It is the responsibility of the citizens to keep the government in check and NOT sign away personal freedoms in the name of 'security'.

People should not fear their government rather the government should fear the people!
