radiators are taller , vents are holes....so what do I have?

Maybe I'm not asking my question clearly enough... I've been in plenty of houses & apartments that have this & I just don't know what it's called - a baseboard maybe? I have GAS heat and big old heater/furnace/whatever in the basement. What is the thing called that the heat actually comes out of that runs along the bottom of the rooms in the house?

Good question: Gas heat usually has a furnace somewhere, and a fan that blows warm air through ducts and out through registers. There are also other vents and ducts that lead back to the furnace. These are called cold air return ducts. They are needed because you can't easily blow air into a closed space.

What you describe almost sounds like a hot water or electric heating system. Can you see the area below the registers? Is there a pipe of some sort going to and leaving that area? If so, it still may use gas to heat the water.

Not sure what your mean. But vents in HVAC systems are called air ducts and there is usually a intake duct.
