According to this radio show, the RCTV, Venezuelan station's lease has ran out and it is switching over to a new name.

The previous station involved supporting the previous harsh dictatorship that wouldn't allow coverage or investigations about the government. It only broadcast soap operas and cartoons.

It is said to have been involved in trying to overthrow Chavez and promoted his assasination. It promoted anti-democratic processes. People are marching now to support Chavez.

But there is no way for this abolished TV station to appeal the decision.

They say other propaganda stations in other countries have shut down for the same things.

Could the US shut down a station that promotes the overthrow of the US government?

The US can, would ans has. It is illegal to advocate violence toward public officials or the violent overthrow of the government. The Secret Service takes thier job seriously.

No. I don't agree. Put the shoe on the other foot. If an American TV station broadcast a call by an opposition politician to kill Bush or Obama, and called it an "editorial," how long would it be before the Secret Service, the U.S. Marshals or the FBI would surround the building, and the Home Shopping Network got themselves another channel? I have my problems with Chavez, but you need to view stories by the U.S. corporate-run media with a little skepticism. Under any reasonable legal doctrine he has the right to shut 'em down RIGHT NOW. But he's just threatening. He's a lot more reasonable than most U.S. liberals and conservatives. . .

The station as critical of him and this is the way totalitarianism starts. People should not be afraid of its government, the government should be afraid of its people.
The demonstrations supporting Chavez's move is orchestrated by him. The one that turned violent was those who believe in freedom of speech and a better country. The reason it became violent was because they were getting rubber bullets and tear gas on them. It had been peaceful before that.
The US does do that but a lot more subtly. When they changed the rules as the maximum allowed by media companies to own a certain number of TV and radio stations, companies such as Newsday Corp. went nuts. Any station that had had any type of progressive format, even if it was 1-2 talk shows, they were purchased and turned into sports stations thus stifling opposing views of the current administration.

For National Security reasons I do believe they could. However in the Chaves instance it was to stop people from hearing the truth and that was all. He is a dictator that does not abide by any democratic society what so ever.
