Let the amount of the cheque be 10x+y
Digits are x and y
If you reverse the digits, the number becomes 10y+x

10x+y-(10y+x)=36
9x-9y=36

x-y=4
x+y=8

2 equations. Solve for x and y
Add the equations

2x=12
x=6
6+y=8
y=2

The amount of the cheque was 10*6 + 2 = $62

Reverse the digits -- $26

62-26 = 36

Let the first digit in the amout be a.
Then the second was 8 - a .............(1)
(10a + 8 - a) - (10(8 - a) + a) = 36
Expand the brackets:
9a + 8 - 80 + 10a - a = 36
Add the terms in a and the absolute terms:
18a - 72 = 36
Divide by 18:
a - 4 = 2
Add 4
a = 6
From (1), the second digit was 8 - 6 = 2.
The check was for 10a + 2 = 10*6 + 2 = $62.
