This really is a hard one to figure out.

If you remove 4 out of 5 letters, you obviously are left with only a single letter. The only single-letter words in English that I can think of are the pronoun "I" and the article "a"........so we have to think of a 5-letter word that makes either one of these sounds. Beats me!

I'm assuming you don't consider "o" to be an actual word in English; this is more of a poetic form of "oh" and wouldn't work in your puzzle, I don't believe.

Please give us the answer, unless somebody has come up with it in the time it takes me to post mine!

aaaargh i cant work it out!
i can find lots of 3 lettered words that work this way and some 4 lettered words, but not a 5 lettered one!

This question is slightly mistaken. There are actually TWO such words in English:

I believe the one INTENDED is the first of these, but whoever made up the question overlooked the second one.
