My 2005 Pathfinder was involved in a crash. My drivers side airbag was deployed. I have heard varying issues on it really being totaled. the damage has pushed my front end into the engine (radiator, etc) but I can't tell if the enginge itself is damaged. It seemed to have removed everything from the front of the frame, but the frame itself (seems) intact. Some say it's a cost analysis, its a new car so they will repair. Then again even though the car is a 2005, it has 82,000 miles on it. With the amound of miles, heavy use, etc. I am not sure I feel safe with "repairs". I have also heard I can get a second opinion on if it is totaled or not. Any truth in any of this? Anyone a insurance adjuster to give me any ideas??

The airbag does have a bearing on if a car is totaled or not. To change an airbag and its associated sensors (which all need to be replaced after an accident) can cost anywhere from $2000.00 to $4000.00 depending on make of car. This cost needs to be added to the total repair of the car. This may run the repair cost higher the worth of the car, thus totaling it out.

In a serious frontal collision, the battery is often destroyed - and the air bag system still functions because it has an immediate and temporary back up supply. Find the best method to render the system safe for your particular vehicle. If you don't have a manual, check your local library for a Haynes or Motor manual. Generally, it is safe if you disconnect the battery and wait 10 or 15 minutes - but to be sure, check the instructions for your particular vehicle. A deployed air bag - regardless of how unlikely - will surely ruin your whole day. Note: Always place the air bag assembly with the mounts down and the air bag cover up - this way it won't be launched if it inadvertently ignites.

The total value of your car in good condition cannot exceed the price to repair , or it will be considered totalled, or if there is a kink in the roof.

I have been in the business for a couple days and as long as the frame was not damaged, and all the body and mechanical arts are replaced then you should have no problems.

When I've heard that phrase used, it's usually in relation to the value of an older car and the cost of replacing the airbag.
