Reduce your speed. Use the cruise whenever possible.

Avoid fast starts/acceleration. Even simply allowing the car to ease back up to speed, when you've had to brake in traffic (not stop) can save fuel.

Do NOT warm your car up in the mornings/afternoons. Start it, then leave.

Turn the engine OFF, when stopped in traffic for long periods. A long period to me is anything over 2 minutes. You know when you're going to be sitting.

Car pool when possible.

Take all your junk OUT. Reduce weight.

Always keep it properly serviced and tuned.

Shoot for the highest overall gear ratio offered by the dealer/manufactor. Especially if you do a lot of highway driving.

MAJOR ITEM... your driving habits.

I consistantly get 29 mpg with my car. Caused by my driving habits. NOT my speed. I usually do the posted or better. I drive a full size family car.

Get a smaller car !! You don't need an SUV to simply go to work, school, shopping, or anything else. Lose the status symbol....get something practical.

Families....get a van. Vans get 2 to 3 times the fuel economy of an SUV.
