You need to have a ROUTER a Switch does not have provisions for sharing a connection. A router has a wide area port and then local area ports and directs traffic accordingly.

A switch just connects network system together but has no routing ability thus it fails to allow the internet to work.

Are you plugging the modem into the WAN port, or are you plugging it into a LAN port?

Very carefully read the directions for your router (switch); it will tell you exactly how to do things.

Oh and also: if hathway is a dial-up internet service (meaning, if the modem makes a lot of funny noises when it logs on) then it will not work with a router(switch) and you can not share its connection.
