The dark was always there beyond the circle of light and comes back when you out (off) the light. Absence of light is darkness. Absence of darkness is light. They are 2 sides of the same coin. One cannot exist without another.
With our physical senses, we cannot see the full electromagnetic spectrum and thus many things appear dark to us, when they are actually emitting em radiation in a different frequency band, like infra-red and ultraviolet etc.

My father always told me he could switch off the light and be undressed and in bed before it was dark, I tried and only managed to do it once, when in a house with gas lighting...

Darkness is composed of little quanta called "darkons". They are like "photons" except they are hard to see. They keep getting lost all the time! "Darkons" absorb energy rather than give energy so that's why you get colder in a dark room.
When you turn off a light, the darkons in the filament absorb the thermodynamic heat from the hot filament cooling it. When they get enough energy absorbed, they fling out into the room giving off darkness.
...am I kidding? hmmmm....

It goes behind you. When you turn around to see it, it's already between your buttocks. If you'll try to separate them to examine, it runs to the first dark hole that it finds.
Well, if you don't want to be raped by the dark, it's better don't turn off the light, but if a blackout occur, at least don't separate your buttocks, OK?

Things r visible when light on reflection enters our eye. When there is no light means no reflection and we r not able to percieve objects. Also the wavelength(during dark) is out of our eye sense.
