Sounds to me like your 256M of Video RAM is "SHARED RAM".

That means that your ATI Radeon is providing half (128M) of it and your system RAM is providing the other half (128M) for a total of 256M.

This is common practice today in both Laptops and Desk Tops. It allows the manufacturers to make their product look appealing without supplying the hardware as it appears "on the surface" in their advertisement/catalog/website.

Best solution to it all is to install more System RAM into your PC if it's possible. Look at the manual for your PC and/or Motherboard. It will tell you how many slots you have and how much RAM each slot will accommodate.

You can also visit these two sites and run their PC analysis tool (select the manual or automatic option) and let it tell you how much RAM you have and how much your PC will accommodate.

Hope this helps.

If you are right then yes you have been ripped off ..

There is system ram
There is graphics card ram

They are two separate things and they should be as advertised.

On budget systems the graphics card uses the system ram so you may have 512mB or ram but your system can only access half of it as the graphics card grabs the other

since most laptops is got a dvmt chipset integrated with the video card, you could of bought a laptop with a defective ram dac chip! hince that the video memory is shared off of the ram in notebooks! right click mycomputer and click properties and check and see how much ram you got! if 256mb ram you should have 64 mb video! if 512 mb of ram, you should have 128 mb of video 1 gb ram = 256mb of video! they could of ment the maximum video memory that you can get out of a notebook! you could do is go to dell.com and get in one of their tech chats! they will explain what's up!

Ok you should contact the manufactuer.... Do not open the Laptop and check that may void your warenty... if you did order that amount and did not get it, they should replace it... I had a Dell Demention a couple a years back and i ordered two DVD burners and only got one... and after about 7hrs of arguing with some guy in india about how a DVDrom Cd/RW-burner was a dvd player with a CD burner in it I got a new one that did what i wanted it to do...
