I'm assuming that 'physical address' means MAC address, and logical means IP address or something similar.

There isn't any such algorithm. Your network card's MAC address is permanently fixed at manufacture, while your IP can be set to anything valid. The mapping is not calculated at all.

Why? Since the physical addresses on the network can be read by tons of existing monitoring software. You can view all IP's and the related MAC addresses with just the right network monitor. Since the MAC (the physical) address is like a serial number for the adapter they wont change.

errr what do you mean physical / logical - i fyou mean the mac adresses these are burnt into devices and cannot be calculated

To find the live ip addresses you can ping the range (of addresses) and find out what ones respond - there are utilities that will do this for you

You want the MAC address or IP? either one can be found in the same place, click START -> RUN and type cmd in the "open" box hit enter and the command prompt opens once at the prompt type ipconfig /all (that is ipconfig(space)/all)... this will list your MAC address as the "physical address" and the IP as the "IP address"
