Do yourself a giant favor and get a Macbook from Apple. Also, wait until you get your student bill or ID. Apple does a back to school special every year (typically starts in August). Last year I got 10% off my Macbook, a free ipod, and a free printer. Oh, and free shipping. If you don't want to wait, you still should get an education discount on the Macbook.
Life would not be the same without mine, I am sure you will be just as happy.
Oh, one more tidbit of advice if you go this way: Get the Apple Care protection plan (it is worth its weight in gold) and the Microsoft Office Suite for Mac. You will need it.

Your school should give you minimum laptop specifications for your courses. Use the info to shop locally, and online, for the best deal that meets or exceeds those specs.

Then, look for online reviews, by make and model, before you buy. Google for them.

The key thing is to find a computer that meets your school's requirements, and then add on to it until you reach your price limit.

Don't forget to check your school's IT department or computer store: usually they work with the computer companies to get special deals for their students.
