IF XP STARTS UP THERE IS NO NEED TO RE INSTALL. JUST FIND WHAT PROBLEMS YOU HAVE AND FIX THEM.
IF YOUR HARD DRIVE IS FULL ,COPY WHAT YOU WANT FROM - MY DOCUMENTS - MY MUSIC - MY PICTURES- TO CD OR DVD OR ANOTHER HARD DRIVE.
DELETE THEM FROM SYSTEM DRIVE. UN INSTALL ANY PROGRAMS YOU DO NOT USE ANY LONGER.
RUN DEFRAG THEN SET VIRTUAL MEMORY TO 2GIGS (2048) IN INITIAL AND MAXIMUM BOXES.
CHECK FOR VIRUS AND SPYWARE.
RESTART COMPUTER.
IF YOU REINSTALL XP WITHOUT ALL DRIVERS YOUR COMPUTER WILL NOT WORK RIGHT. SOUND CARDS - MODEMS - VIDEO CARDS - ETHERNET - MOUSE AND KEYBOARD ALL MAY STOP WORKING.
SOME OLDER DRIVERS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND.

use a boot cd or floppy Win98SE:
http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

(the DOS your using is actually MS-DOS)

or use DBAN if you totally want to wipe your drive:
http://dban.sourceforge.net/

What's with all you guys here wanting to format anyway? Never seen that term used so much! If you want to reinstall WinXP the installer will reformat the disk or partition. (Delete the old C:\ partition first with it then make a new one and install.
