I know how and why they have soft spots, but I was just curious as to how long to takes for the spots to be fully hardened.

developmentally average kids take 2-3 years. There is also a disorder(sorry i dont know the name) where they start to fuse too early and must be surgically seperated so the brain can grow. i know this because a friend's little brother had this condition. It is hereditary, and more common in boys. He had to have surgery at 1 and a half and now he wears a helmet to rpotect his head(he will only wear this for a couple of years thank goodness)

Normally 2-3 years. Some may harden sooner.

Wow, everyone else said 2-3 years. My son who just turned 3 months.. if you feel his head where his soft spot is. you can barely tell it's there and the doctor said that was fine so, I'm not real sure.. I would say.. just whenever.. Sorry, I know I didn't help. :)
