I take care of my three grandsons while their parents work. Since I am the only guardian at home during school hours, I often volunteer for events at the school.

I just finished coaching the kids for track and field events, for which they are competing today. I have only one grandson competing however, and two that aren't, so I wasn't free to go along.

Last week was the school fun fair. Helping to sell the donated items, and to run the various games while the usual attendants went off for a break, was fun! Kids having good, clean fun are still the same as when I was small, and a treat to watch.

I also volunteer for mentoring when a student is having particular trouble integrating. The principal noticed years ago that kids seem to listen to me, and talked me into helping with some of his most hard-core students. I think my success comes from not being willing to take any crap that these kids might dish out. I am consistant and fair, and the kids seem to appreciate it.

To teach my grandsons social responsibility, I have had them donating their time at the food bank for a couple of years now, for every holiday when the food banks become extra busy.

And we always earn money at holiday times, which we then donate to our local soup kitchens, where we also help serve holiday meals.

I want my grandsons to grow up being thankful for the little they DO have. And being aware that no matter where they may fall on the socioeconomic scale, people are still people and deserve to be treated with respect (although they STILL have a problem treating EACH OTHER that way!).

I have two adult grandson's living with me while they attend school in my area, and my youngest son and his partner live here with their new baby. I make needlework gifts for charity, and try to get out the word about www.thehungersite a free place to help feed starving people.

With tending my garden, being a homemaker for 7, and caring for two dogs, and an elderly brother, I don't have much time for out of the home volunteer work.
