I think the shower drains slowly because of my hair and build up in the pipes. Is there an inexpensive solution? Since it's septic, all drain cleaners or chemicals need to be septic tank safe.

I am also on a septic system, and I pour 1/2 cup of Baking Soda and 1 Cup of Vinegar down the drain. This always seems to work for me. However, you can also check the Draino bottle b/c I think it is septic safe. Another tip for septic systems, once a month pour 1/2 -1 Gallon of Buttermilk down your toilet (any one in the house). This works as well as Rid-X

Shower drains usually clog up with a combination of hair, oils and soap. Look down into the drain with a flashlight. You may be able to remove clumps of hair with tweezers. If you have access to the trap, remove it and clean out. A snake can remove most of the clog. A 25 foot handheld snake is about $15 at Home Centers. Last resort would be chemicals. Since you are on a septic system, I would advise using an enzyme cleaner such as DrainCare by Zep. Enzyme cleaners cling to and eat organic clogs. Safe for septics also.

Try a plunger first. If that doesn't work buy an electric snake with a 5/16" rod. It will cost over 200 dollars but it can be used for a lifetime. To have a plumbing company rod the drain will cost about 150 dollars.

First see if you can remove hair that is traped in the drain. You can get a product called THRIFT at home depot or lowe's .I used it when working for an apartment community. It really works
