If you have a Google account or if you want to open one (free), then go here:
http://www.google.com/analytics/
If you want a free alternative to Google, then try this site:
http://www.statcounter.com/
They both work in a similar fashion.
After you register and give them the details of your website, you will be given some html code to copy.
You paste the html code right at the bottom of your web page just before the final closing tags:

I would stick with Google analytics, however, if possible, I would use awstats or webalizer if you have access to raw log files. You can always review stat reports from both sources for a week history and compare the numbers there.

Google analytics analyzes the traffic that comes to the web site. you will be able to see geography information (country, state, city); referencing web sites (not search engines) and search engines.
You can copy and paste the code to the html body.
Another solution (in beta stages) that I found out lately is http://www.enquisite.com/
it analyzes search engines only.

you don't normally use analytics for blogs.

for the code, just put it anywhere inside the body
