Someone other than a family member? Kurt Vonnegut. It's pretty random and he's by far the only author/famous person I feel that way about, but I met him once, and I was pretty attached to his books in early high school when I was going through something really terrible. I thought of him as sort of a crazy uncle who's wit and irreverent humor helped me cope with things that seemed so absurd. It was probably partially because I don't have much of an extended family in this country, no grandparents that are still alive either. For some weird reason, I've been thinking about him a lot lately-- or rather, I've been thinking about Cat's Cradle and Galapagos a lot lately. Go figure...
