1. Carbon tetrachloride is 1.6 times heavier than water.
2. Carbon tetra chloride and water do not mix.

So when you mix these two liquids, the water floats on the surface of the tetrachloride forming clear layers and can be easily separated. There is a glass device whichn is used to separate these liquids. It is called a separating funnel. This is a bottle like device which has a tap at the bottom. When you put a mixture of the two liquids in this device, the carbon tetrachloride forms the lower layer. If yu open the tap carefully, the tetrachloride comes out first and can be taken out completely. The upper layer of water remains in the funnel.
So you have separated the two liquids.

The two liquids are separated because their specific gravities are different . So this method is called " Gravity separation "

Carbon Tetrachloride And Water

oK if this is for a school science exam listen carefully, You need to boil the water to exactly 99C then add 2 tablespoons of pancake mix.......pour that into a small dish......peel 3 onions and juice them so you have a solution of onion juice, (need at least 200mls) this will break down the tetrachloride. The pancake mix acts as a conduit for the reaction exchange. Add the tetrachloride only after the water has cooled to room temp. leave it the fridge for 12 hours, and when you check it the next day you have to carefully pour the top liquids off and this is your seperated solution. I know if sounds silly but thats how its done.

CCl4 and H2O are not miscible. The two will separate out with the CCl4 sitting on top of the water. Just use a separating funnel to separate them.

Edit:
Bhaskaran is right the CCl4 will be on the bottom. Didn't think, most organics are lighter than water and hence float. Sorry :).

These liquids are immiscible - they do not mix. So a piece of equipment called a separating funnel is used.
Each liquid is run out separately.
