Right with you on that.
I was of the mistaken idea that the Police were on the streets to prevent accidents, to prevent unlawful behaviour etc. When so it seems they are not bothered about the prevention part at all (lets face it, for those with money, or cant be bothered to register the car, how is a camera ever going to stop them). It seems the revenue that they can bring in is now far more important than criminals. To top it all, it only brings in revenue from those that are not driving illegally (in terms of having Licences, correctly registered cars etc.)
As for someone saying that we havent been in a car accident, that is my entire point .... How is a Policeman on a bridge causing people to suddenly brake actually improving the situation ? How is a fine in the post to someone that has not registered the car (ie. they wont get fined) in their name going to stop them speeding ? Why are all these people happy that the Police are "Hunting down speeders", they are'nt, that is my point, they are just pointing a speed gun and hoping the car they are pointing at is legally owned ... the worst offenders do not drive around in taxed, insured etc. cars !
Ok, so the Police are here instead it seems with their little thumbs-down. Have to laugh. Get to work STOPPING criminals driving illegally, get off here playing God.

The Police are paid to enforce UK laws and the laws are there to protect us; 70mph is the max speed by law, so they're just doing their job. But if you had lost a loved one in a road accident, whether motorway or other, you would be pleased to see them there. Motorways are claimed to be the safest place to drive, and this is true insofar as there are no traffic lights, no pedestrians, crossroads, sharp bends etc., so statistically you are less likely to have a crash on a motorway than on any other road. The problem, however, is that motorway crashes often happen at much higher speeds, and it's speed that kills. If the Motorway Police prevent the death or serious injury of one person, in one day, simply by being there, then their presence is well justified. We should not forget, however, that their presence isn't just to monitor drivers' speeds, they're also engaged in looking for cars that have been used to execute crimes elsewhere. For instance the remit of the Central Motorway Police Group (Midlands) is to: Deny criminals the use of our roads, Reduce casualties, Target anti-social use of vehicles, Tackle terrorism, and Improve public confidence. And it's worth noting that between Nov 2005 and April 2006, officers of that one area recovered property with a total value of almost £5m. I think these guys are worth every penny of the taxpayers money they receive! And to those who give me a 'thumbs down' due to lack of imagination or intellect - I hope for their sakes that they, nor someone close to them, is ever found in the mangled wreck of a car on one of our motorways!

All points are true, but to the cost of ambulance etc I understand but .Whats worse the Police spending all day to to stop an accident which will only happen on another road anyway.
Or stopping a poor lady getting her house robbed or the car owner losing his car.
Or the child stolen.Better time stopping the real criminals then some driver whom is going a little faster than he should be.
3 people stabbed today but hey we stopped a motorist doing 65 in a 60.

because unfortunately drivers do not stick to speed limits.
And as a tax payers (and non car owners) it is cheaper overall for you and me to have Policepeople controlling the speeds and therefore preventing serious smash ups than have to pay the huge ambulance, hospital and other costs involved in a large motorway accident.

If he had a handheld radar he does not desire a digital camera. He can write the extensive variety down and that's good adequate for the courtroom."officers opinion corroborated by potential of the radar examining". in case you have not heard interior 14 days yo could desire to be living house unfastened. remember your speedo examining of 80 could be a real velocity as low as seventy two

Watch Traffic Cops on BBC 1 Wednesdays or Road Wars on Sky1 Tuesday, and you will see why you have wasted 4 points on a dumb question such as this. How many times have you been in the outside lane of a motorway overtaking the middle lane when some ar* e hole comes tearing up behind you lights flashing and giving the V signs. I bet you have said on those occasions where are the police when you want them, or are you one of those ar*e holes who do it. You could sit in the outside lane of any motorway and do 180mph and there would always be some prat wanting to overtake you.

OK, at the risk of playing devil's advocate and incurring the wrath of multiple thumbs down.....
I think the police tend to concentrate on 'accident black-spots' and/or areas where speeding is common.
Most accidents on motor ways are due to excessive speed and the potential consequences are just horrific - a single accident has the potential to kill as many people as a mass murderer.
Perhaps this high-profile modus operandi (woooo, get met me!) is way of acting a deterrent?
(Of course I do tend to think differently when I'm driving on the motorway! - just trying to be objective!)
OK, I'm bracing myself....let rip with the thumbs down!.....

Don't you know that the police are highly trained professional and do all they can to reduce crime!. (speeding is a crime) . Robbery - house breaking drug dealing and the like take up lots of time and are hard work!.
Catching speeding motorists is very easy way of reducing crime! they see motorist has habitual criminals who need to be stopped at all costs. All the other crimes which are harder to investigate get left for someone else to do!.

I'm thankful the police are out there hunting down speeders. People who speed do nothing but risk their lives and the lives of others. Give them all tickets!

I can understand the points raised..........however, I am guessing that you have never been involved in a serious accident caused by a speeding driver - and yes, it was on a major road.
