I have a high CPU use, usually ranging from 15%-100%, how can i lower it. I also scanned my computer for viruses so maybe it isnt that. What could it be??

Your computer has a series of background tasks running at all times. However, most of your systems required tasks don't use that much of your CPU's limited resources. And most of those are vital to the well being of your computer system.

Those icons down by the clock on your computer are the background tasks that you can actually see. If you know what they all are, I'd suggest uninstalling some of those you don't need anymore, or at least turning them off temporarily.

In response to hari h's answer, I'd like to suggest not doing that, unless you're sure your ending something you absolutely want to end. Especially if the user name is listed as "system". It's best to just uninstall the program that is using so many resources, rather than risk potential system instability.

The same thing is happening to me with my useless 2000 $ PC. i suspect that while i was playing one of these online multiplayers the host server tapped into my PC and screwed everything up. i have done multiple ( different companies) scans and nothing shows up. it seems as if the CPU is trying to do all the work even though i have an 8800gt oc GP. there is something called dma controller that is missing from my PC.it allows memory to be used without using CPU.OK, so i tried to update that driver, said no driver, clicked on other and it said driver working correctly.......... so anyway that's the only thing i know. also my files are missing and or moved around...and i didn't move anything. i bought some recovery disks and will most likely have to erase or replace the hard drive.

If this is happening primarily at stat up, it's probably your antivirus updating or vista or google desktop dong their indexing. Google desktop is useless for MOST people. I'd go into msconfig process tab ad see what it is thats causing this. I'd turn off whats unnecessary

I'll bet you have some programs that operate stealthily such as a p2p that is probably working as a server or AOell or a spyware that is usin your processor, ramm and bandwidth to sell your personal info and surfing habits.
