As more programs are running simultaneously they'll slow down your computer more and more. Most anti-virus software runs in the background and scans any programs you open, files you download or send, and other things. If you have Norton Internet Security running it should be covering enough to keep you protected.

I always use a firewall and an anti-virus while my computers running. They boot while my computer starts and I keep them on. Firewalls keep ports protected, anti-virus software checks all programs and software. These two together are my defense.
Every few days I run scans on my computer using anti-spyware, anti-adware and anti-virus software.
My selected software is a range from Norton, EZ Firewall (ZoneAlarm Firewall), Adaware (From Lavasoft) and Avast Antivirus! I suggest using these if you can't afford pay-to-use software or if you don't know what else to use. :-)

Always use caution when browsing and downloading stuff on the Internet. :-) Your best defense is to know what you're doing online!

1. Norton Spyware Scan (Yahoo toolbar) cannot slow your computer, it only runs when you are actively running a scan with it.

2. Norton 2003-2006 were huge resource hogs that would slow all but top-of-the-line machines down.

Norton 2007 has been completely re-done and now uses a very reasonable amount of computer resources.

It's often Antivirus programs don't work very well and viruses slips through. This is not the case with Norton. Definately try it out here:

Norton is a "resource hog". They have gotten better in recent editions but there are much better out there. All utility software will affect your system's speed, the trick is which one does it the least for your system. (Variable include which type of browser is used, use of Instant Message software, etc.)

ANY prgram that uses memory and processor cycles will slow down your puter. Nortn is HUGE, but it is a proven comodity. Just use NIS, and remember dont use more than one anivirus program.
