Many companies package larger size products and market them as smaller so their cost per item is lower through quantity buying. YOUR blanket statement is incorrect. SOMETIMES your statement is correct, because they have turned off adressing to the upper chips on the board. Sometimes, its just a smaller quantity of chips on the board. I also know of some people who make larger capacity out of existing drives by adding chips or modifying the adressing chip.
There are some ways to change the size, IF it was in fact locked ( a "crippled" chip) tools are NOT generally availible to the public.

If this was possible, which I highly doubt, your flash drive would likely have a VERY short lifespan, with likely no ability to rewrite data, meaning as soon as you added something and deleted it, you'd not get the memory back.
Flash Drives, unlike Hard Drives, have a very limited ability to rewrite themselves. If this ability is used too much it's lost, and then the flash drive ceases to function, because there is simply no room left to do anything at all.

The type of hacking you're doing is just a memory buffer. The stick will look like it have 4 gig or so but it still is actually a 256MB stick.

I've done it and can't recommend it. The data will become extremely unstable with a 98% chance of corruption. 4GB sticks are getting cheap, save up.

Um... no... You can't do that. You could probably somehow make it seem like a flash drive could store more, but it couldn't in reality.
