Well, if you're only playing for fun, then remember that you're having fun while you're playing!!

Even the best musicians often get caught up in what you "should" do on your instrument.

But you said it yourself "I love the viola". So, next time, take out your viola and don't take out any music. Just play around and find what sounds are most appealing to you. If you have a dog or a cat, play for them (they might hate it, but then you can chase them around the house playing viola; this makes viola more relaxed and fun).

The point here is: What is your motivation for playing at all?

I think that essentially, it should involve having fun!

Also, listen to some really amazing orchestral music when you get home from work. That will pump you up to practice!

If possible during work listen to CD's of music that features the viola. Practice 20 minutes a day Monday thru Friday. On Saturday and Sunday I would recommend that you do 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening. I'm also in the U.S. Army and I play the piano. Whenever I have CQ I take my digital piano and play during CQ. Sometimes you can participate in Army Shows. I'm performing a piano solo on the 15th of June. Looking forward to being heard by an audience motivates me to practice alot.

Make a poster on your computing device that reads: "No training =no fulfillment" submit it precise in front of your piano, submit it in the bathing room, submit it on your locker in school. wether you prepare or not, time is flying by potential of and could not end for all of us. So immagine 5 years down the line after not training, you nevertheless experience to blame which you're actually not getting everywhere, yet you're 5 years older!! If on the choice, you supply your self quarter-hour to an hour an afternoon, in that specific same 5 years you would be so far into giving your self between the main superb presents you are able to desire to ever desire. enjoying music is so useful and gratifying, do not rob your self of this

I would make friends with a pianist or a violinist .... or both ...and find some music you can play, and arrange a date or two right close together to play ... there's a nice video on You Tube of Itzhak Perlman & Pinchas Zuckerman playing unaccompanied duets for violin & viola ... maybe you would enjoy listening to those ...

so: keep playing!!

Motivate yourself by playing songs that you actually like. Try finding the sheet music when you have the time and start playing. If that doesn't help then just continue and play the pieces you know.

one of the best techniques is to enjoy what you're doing.
with the hectic life you lead it may be a good idea to unwind first.
listen to what you'll be playing, performed by a great musician, or simply listen to some other music on the viola.
this way you will not only be relaxed, but get inspire to play.
try it out! it's a great trick

Listen to a recording of like an 8-year-old that can play infinitely better than you can ever hope to. That always gets me going.

I think you must learn to UNWIND yourself completely, your playing is not helping you very much.

Why dont you try writing online, like one person said, if you want others to smile at you, you smile at them.

If you want to motivate yourself, then why not motivate others so that the advice you give others will sink inside you and motivate you. How is that for a simple solution ???
