I watched a documentary a few months ago called Born into Brothels, it was about impoverished children of female prostitutes in Calcutta; wasn't the saddest movie I've ever seen but it certainly was depressing as hell. other sad/depressing movies that rank high up there:

schindler's list

taxi driver

mysterious skin

21 grams

The Passion of the Christ

In America

Crash

Philadelphia

The Color Purple

Titanic

Million Dollar Baby

The Constant Gardener

Brokeback Mountain

Munich

Cold Mountain

Beaches

Dancer in the Dark (starring Bjork) was probably the most heartwrenching film I have ever seen. It's no wonder the film caused so much controversy at the Cannes Film Festival.

This is a film so unbelievably tragic, that having the film "sugar-coated" by having scenes play like a musical could not lighten the heaviness and sadness of the story.

I found this to be one of the hardest films to watch.

And could I forget "The War Zone"? This movie was directed by Tim Roth and stars Tilda Swinton. This is so film was so dark, so disturbing, that it was literally painful to watch, especially for one scene in particular. It's about a typical family that falls apart (or already was apart) when the son discovers a secret between his father and older sister. This movie could, in no way, have had a happy ending.

Saddest would be The Million Dollar Baby. Got all so teary when swank bites her tongue in order to kill herself, thats the last thing she could do since she was fully paralised. Oh! terrible.. Cant imagine doin so..
Saddest and also most beautiful would be Finding Neverland.. I wish sylvia didnt die and they lived happily ever after... but then it wouldnt have been as significant as it was..
Saddest and much moving would be The Green Mile.. Somehow it touched my heart and drew tears outa my eyes.

(as far as the movie goes ofcourse, In my case, I made sure not to pick a very good movie, because I tend to forget the company I'm with when watching it ; and in female company; you can turn the TV off and get on to do "other activities........."
