Everything that happens in life is premeditated. Why? Whatever happens now owes its existence to our thoughts few minutes before. Every action... the cause of every action first generates in our thinking. Whatever we deeply desire or wish... finally precipitates in form of action. We only act on related thoughts... thoughts that existed and were invoked by us... never otherwise!
If I desire becoming rich... actions that follow compel me to work in a direction where riches are available in abundance. I just need to do my karma and accumulate the riches. In absence of desire, I would never indulge in karma that involves accumulating riches. This is for certain! Does this mean human beings can manifest destiny? Yes, those who transcend life... to whom the meaning of life becomes absolutely clear... finally govern their destiny. They ultimately become the masters of their fate!
Our present ephemeral life of 70 to 80 years on Mother Earth is not the end of all! Our soul atman within our heart that has manifested the body and not vice versa is the real governor of things. Whatever karma we perform now owes its existence to the thoughts invoked in present life and the residual balance of karma of the previous manifestations (primarily termed as Prarabdha karma in Hinduism). It is negative Prarabdha karma of the earlier manifestations that is killing. It is this that ultimately makes us a pawn in the hands of life. We never know what fate may befall in life!
If we committed sins in previous manifestations... which are yet to fructify... we are bound to suffer in the present life on this account! None on Mother Earth can escape the clutches of Prarabdha karma. Those who escape rather control Prarabdha karma in totality finally gain enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and salvation (moksha). Cutting across shackles of Prarabdha karma is the toughest task that faces mankind head-on.
If we have negative residual balance of karma of previous lives that has yet to fructify... better we indulge in good deeds in present life. To neutralize the effects of the negative karma, Doing Punya karma (good deeds) in present manifestation is the only way out! Most human beings on Mother Earth do not fix a goal in life. Life simply passes by... they leave everything to chance and destiny! At times... they suffer! Why blame God or anything for our sufferings!
If we desire taking control of destiny in our hands... we need to have a goal in life. Having fixed the goal the journey is half complete. To pursue this goal with bulldog determination and all eggs in one basket is the real mantra of life! Patience, persistence and perseverance are to be practiced at all stages of life! Only then we realize the goal of our dreams and finally manifest destiny. More on Destiny - http://www.godrealized.org/are_you_a_slave_of_your_destiny.html

If you think that everything happen for a reason, it depends on the person that believes it. Fate, is the one thing that we as human beings, believe, but some persons would contradict it. My answer to your question would be that, the life we live is the one we choose to take, we have commonsense, in all of us, and we, can decide how we are going to live it with the knowledge, as to make something in our life, that would benefit us in the future, or just exist, with the excuse that it was fate that made you live your life as you saw fit.

Well most things in life happen because of your actions up to that point. For every action there is a reaction and life is such. When people say it is out of there control that they have to rely on fate or destiny it is mainly because there actions thus far has gotten them so deep they can only enjoy the ride good or bad..

Indeed, fate, destiny etc. are lame excuses for failure. Just because we can't always trace our failures back to our own shortcomings does in no way imply as though they are caused by any super being or system with some unknown but sound and valid reason. Such a belief is nothing short of self deceit.

Everything has a cause, but that is not the same as having a reason. First, don't pay much attention to anything that "many people say". Many people are in the habit of pretending they know something when they don't. If "everything happens for a reason" that means there has to be an intelligence inflicting his judgments upon us, and we are helpless to resist. That is called pareidolia, the tendency to see animal likenesses in random data (faces in clouds), or intelligent motivations in natural events. On the other hand, it is not possible to adequately explain human history without supposing the existence of a devil. So there you go: devil, or no devil?

Under the doctrine of absolute pre-determination, society cannot hold us responsible if we decide to get drunk and our actions result in an automobile accident. Such incidents would have been part of a chain of causality that originated with the beginning of the universe. If we have no Free Will, there can be no responsibility and no punishments. Society could not exist.
The speculation that we have no free will defies common sense and our everyday experience of life. With the intervention of free will, our future, and thus the future of the universe, will follow a path different from the path it would have pursued without our intervention.
In addition to scientific considerations, common sense insists that Free Will exists. Who would deny that we have Free Will when we put one foot in front of the other and decide, of our own volition, of our own Free Will, to go for a walk or not go for a walk this afternoon? It is clearly irrational to believe that a chain of causality (pre-determination) at the time of the Big Bang determines if we go for a walk this afternoon, or not.

NO, but all effects have causes. Our experience of reality mirror our chaotic mostly unconscious beliefs about self and the world. The learned defensive thought system controls our perceptions and experience of reality.
YES, terms like fate are an excuse for not trying to understand how our beliefs cause effects and have consequences.

Yes! Start with the three D's: Meaning what you chose in life will affect your outcome in the future. Your decision will dictate your destiny. So if you make a horrible decision, then that is one you'll have to live with all through life. I believe you have the choice, however, God is in complete control of everything.

No. Not everything in life happens for a reason. Some things in life happen because certain people hate you really bad and have enough time on their hands to make your life miserable. Pax - C
