Afterall, we're not talking about an abortion here, this is HIS child as well and he should restrict her from drinking alcohol...(i'm not talking about a small glass of wine once in a blue moon).

You opinions...should he or shouldn't he be able to stop her. I would. For the sake of my child I definitely would...I would even have her hospitalized until she delivers the baby.

Call the police, after she spends a couple times in jail every time she drinks she will stop. If there are any birth defects when the child is born they will be severe, I know my friends wife drank the whole time she was pregnant and there son will never be able to take care of himself, she should be jailed for 20 years in my opinion.

I have had 2 half glasses of wine during my pregnancy, but neither were in public as I would've caused a scene if someone were presumptuous and rude enough to actually say something to me about my bump and having a miniscule amount of alcohol. And I bet it would be pretty hard to find charts of any kind, detailing how much/what kind of damage can be done to a fetus from only 1 or 2 glasses of champagne during the entire 9 months...such small amounts are harmless.

Obviously, the Husband shares fault in that pregnancy by engaging in "conceptual" intercourse with his wife, KNOWING, she's an ALCOHOLIC. If HE thought that she would change her ALCOHOLIC ways? He was dead wrong. Addiction is a disease. If a Husband can't get his wife treated BEFORE creating life with his Alcoholic wife, then, who's fault is it if the Mother continues her alcoholic ways? The Alcoholic Wife? Or the SOBER Husband? Who is more STABLE to make a decision? I would say the SOBER and STABLE one. Wouldn't you agree?

The fact of the matter is, a Man shouldn't plant his sperm into a female that is an ADDICT. Just by Him planting it into the female, He shares the responsibility as well. MEANING, if he wants a healthy baby born from the addict? Then HE should step up to the plate and do everything legally possible to get the addict institutionalized during her pregnancy to avoid any harm to the child. There is ALWAYS an exception to the rule for Men when it comes to Legalities, such as this. At least it will legally show that the Man has an interest in the unborn child.

It's so funny when things are shaded in the gray areas, One can actually see it in color, if One looks at it in a panoramic view and visualize everything with an open mind. Fascinating to say the least.

Edit ksoileau: LOL! Yes, what you said in response to my opinion is so very true. I'm SO happy you are finally seeing the light to admit fault and share the responsibilities of creating LIFE. After all, without the the Husband's sperm, the Alcoholic Wife will be just that...an alcoholic Wife and not an alcoholic Mother-to-be. LIFE! Isn't it wonderful? You can carry on now....

I believe it should be a criminal offence to drink while pregnant. It is common knowledge the severe consequences and risks to the health of the child. How does wreakless endangerment sound to you.I think the husband should be able to stop her from drinking. The consequences being she will likely divorce him and then say he isn't the father.Of course a paternity test can't be done till it is born( I don't think ) If she won't stop drinking she should of made the decision to abort. But that is a whole new ball game isn't it.Alcoholism is an illness so some people can't quit drinking on there own therefore they need help...like getting treatment in a hospital. Most women get morning sickness I can't imagine having a hang over too.Any woman who drinks while pregnant probably shouldn't be a mom anyway. It's shamefull and should be against the law.

Abortion is something that is up to both parents to decide, but of course the mother has the last say since it is her body after all. However in this matter it sounds like you think she just has a drinking problem or just doesn't care. This is serious. I would consider that child abuse and wouldn't be surprised if it continued after birth, if the baby makes it that is. Talk to her about it, but you can't force her to do anything, because unfortunately you would probably go to jail yourself for domestic violence. It's a sad thought, but it happens. If she won't cooperate on her own I suggest calling the police and getting her some serious help. If she wants this baby she needs to be more responsible or she doesn't deserve to be a parent.

I don't see the problem. From a practical standpoint, whatever the mother wants, the mother gets regardless the father's wishes.
I highly doubt most feminists will agree with a policy or law that gives ANY man a legal standing above woman's choice.
If the father has no rights whatever in cases of abortion of his unborn child, it is very unlikely he would he be given any authority over any other facet of it's welfare. That could possibly set the stage to question women's legal superiority.

It's stupid but that's what you get when you grant legal superiority to those of the "right" sex and it could still allow the father to be guilty of his wife's actions.

My MOTHER was a DRUNK. I am only here today because She was made to stop drinking and to get help for Her addictions. Children belong to the entire society, and it is the responsibility of Us all to protect the welfare, well being and life of any and all children, regardless of what a drunken Woman might say to the contrary.
Any Husband who will not protect His progeny from the risks associated with the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is not fit to be called a Man!
Sorry. But that is how I feel.

This is a sad question, but the first thing that pops into my mind is WHY did he decide to have a child with this woman?

People should get to know each other and develop some trust BEFORE deciding to have a baby instead of trying to sort things out while one is on the way.

Hmm that's a tricky one, I wish it was that easy.

How would you stop her other than through physical force?

If there was a way to do it, yes a husband SHOULD be able to stop his wife from drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

Unfortunately, life is not ideal and people make their own choices. Pregnant women should not be allowed to buy alcohol in my opinion because they are putting another person's life at risk. In my view it's akin to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Hi Radames, yeah good question. I suppose if she can jail him for smoking in front of the unborn and already born? If he gets a dose of road rage she should just push a button in her handbag and the national guard comes out and busts him. It's got to be about balance IMO.

BTW new evidence suggests women should not consume alcohol at all during pregnancy.

Don't know why feminists got a special mention here this question is about health is it not? You are concerned about the health of the unborn child Radames? Surely not wondering if circumstance might give you an imperfect offspring? Which, of course, you can blame the woman for. BTW did you know that a lot of brain injured children get that way due to birth accidents - not alcohol. What next a Pol Pot style regime where we get our six shooters and hunt down the offending physicians? Especially if they're females.
