reward is something (anything, really) that is given in exchange for some action or behavior. An award is usually one of two things: ( 1 ) a medal or decoration, ( 2 ) money or rights/priveledges given by a court of law. Awards are often tokens that are sources of pride and meant to be displayed, whereas rewards tend to be more fleeting and practical.

example:

As a reward for working on his days off, Sam was given an extra day of vacation.
(Sam received no medal or certificate or anything else)

Sam received an award for Employee of the Month.
(Sam probably got some certificate or something (the 'award'), but may not have gotten anything practical.)

A reward is a payoff and is proactive. It is a way to get people to do things the might not do otherwise. You offer it on the front end to get the desired behavior. It is usually guaranteed in exchange for the behavior.

An award is a recognition and is reactive. It is a way of recognizing something that someone did or accomplished without the guarantee of payoff. It is given after the accomplishment.

An award is a prize given for something, as in "She received the Academy Award for best actress." A reward is reinforcement given to compensate someone for something they did which benefitted others; for example, "He received a reward for returning the lost puppy." While an award may consist only of recognition for something the person did (we give awards every year to students who have achieved the highest marks in their programs, but there is no money or gift associated with those awards), a reward generally assumes that something of value is given to the individual in consideration for what they have given to others (as when money is given to someone who finds a lost item or reports a criminal act).

AN award is a sign of a great achievement but has no value beyond sentimental.
A reward is given for something you did that has some value such as returning a lost puppy and you get $50 for the deed.

An award is something you give someone for achieving something.

A reward is positive reinforcement for a modeled behavior.

Awards help people feel good about themselves and rewards get them to do what they should.
___________
Don't forget, awards can work as rewards, but never do it the other way around!

Example: if a kid gets a scoop of ice cream for every "A" he achieves on his report card, it is a reward for expected behavior. The award he got was the "A" on his report card. But never give a kid an "A" in class for not disrupting everyone. He has to earn it.

If it is recognized that you did something well, you get a reward and it may be an award. There are two kinds of rewards, extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic rewards are awards that are something tangible that is given to you and intrinsic rewards are feeling good or proud about what you did.

I think award is given when you are best in something while reward is something good that you received for doing something good.

"Rewards" are the more intangible day-to-day activities of recognition and motivation that are given to individuals to encourage them and to acknowledge their contributions. As such, rewards tend to be less formal, more private and more personal.

"Awards" are the periodic provision of tokens of appreciation or symbols of recognition to individuals. Awards usually are publicly presented.
